Shadowhunters Season 2 Episdoes 1-3 Review

Hi guys, today I want to have a chat about the brand new season of Shadowhunters!

For those of you who don’t know or are stopping by my blog for the first time, I am a huge fan of Cassandra Clare’s books and have been hoping so hard that the Freeform adaptation is going to be a success. This isn’t going to be a negative review but it’s not going to be a glowing one either, it’s just going to be a quick discussion about, which for me are the highs and lows of season 2 of Shadowhunters so far.

shadowhunters-jpg-2

The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Let’s start with the good,  since season one the actors seem like they’re really getting a handle on their characters and coming together as a unit. My problem is not with the actors, I think they were well cast and are it seems a talented lot, my issue is how the writers have chosen to portray the characters from book to screen (but I’ll get to that).

The show is enjoyable with highs and lows and it has something that a lot of shows don’t have, a built-in fan base. If I was watching it having not read the books I would say it had a bit of a Vampire Diaries feel to it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing it just the way Shadowhunters is shot, the ‘iffy’ dialogue and the interaction between the characters stinks of a teen drama and The Mortal Instruments book series is so much more than that. After all, children’s/young adult literature that can only be read by children is pretty poor quality literature and the same should be said of adaptations of its works should it not? The book series is a hard hitting gritty saga with some seriously mature content, done differently I think the show could have received a much wider audience and I feel the show runners and writers did the show a disservice by putting it in such a pigeon hole.

shadowhunters-3

Now for the not so great, hardly anything that’s currently happening in the show actually happened in the books. I do not understand, do the writers think they can do better than the author? The author who sold millions of copies of her books, who is beloved by her fans because her world actually makes sense.

shadowhunters

Look, the Shadow World like all the best words out there (Narnia, Middle Earth, The Wizarding Word and so on) has rules, break those rules and everything around you starts to crumble. I laughed out loud watching episode three, Clary all of a sudden having a rune that gives her the same powers as Tessa Grey? Come on writers, there is no such Rune that’s one of the reasons Tessa (A character from The Infernal Devices for all who don’t know) is so special, she is unique and all of sudden, what she isn’t unique, she isn’t special? And don’t get me started on the whole Stele swipe thing, what is that seriously?

I am not opposed to writers changing a few things when books are adapted for the big and small screen, look at A Game of Thrones and Outlander they are both fantastic examples of book to television done really, really well and changes have been made in both shows without damaging the integrity of the core material.

Magnus Bane

I also want to talk about the character of Magnus, what the hell have they done to him?!Book Magnus is funny, sexy, sassy and full of one-liners, t.v Mangus is sooo serious and a bit needy for my taste. For me there is no comparison it’s like the writers have sucked all the life out of the character. Harry Shum Jr who plays him does a good job but the lines he is given are not a lot to work with.

Overall I am giving Shadowhunters a 3/5 stars it’s not bad, but it’s not great either. I believe the show runners are changing for the second half of the season so we will see what happens going forward.

Parabatai

Mild Spoilers for Lady Midnight and Episode 3 of Shadowhunters ahead

shadowhunters-4

I don’t want to end this review on a negative note to I would like to mention something that I loved. In Cassandra Clare’s most recent book Lady Midnight she talks a lot about Parabatai and what they mean to each other and at one point explains how the Parabatai ceremony is almost like a wedding. When Jace saves Alec I really felt that we got a good idea of just how bonded Parabatai are and how if one of them dies a part of the other would die too, it was a beautiful scene.

That’s it for today I hope you enjoyed my Shadowhunters chat! I’ll be back with more Shadowhunters later in the season, see you next time!

Let’s Talk About Reading Snobbery and Why All books are Okay!

So, I’m currently reading a book that I am really, really loving (That’s Voyager by Diana Gabaldon just so you know) but it got me thinking we love the books we love.

The books that make us stay up till the early hours till our eyes feel try and can’t stay open for another moment, the books we think about when we’re away from them, desperate to be back in that world, with those characters, those are the special books.

voyager jamie and claire

But it got me thinking, reading is personal, and our favourite books they can become part of us and influence us and in some cases stay with us always. What matters to you or me may not matter to the next person. For example, I like the Harry Potter books, I enjoy them I am a fan but they did not affect me in the way they did others of my generation and those who came after me.

harry

I didn’t read the books until I was an adult and there fore some of that magic was lost but not all of it, because some magic  can only touch a child and that’s why some of our childhood favourites can become so important to  adults. (But in case you were wondering I’m a Hufflepuff). I did read the Twilight books and did love them but didn’t suffer from Twilight fever (Thankfully) but why thankfully?

sedrick digory

Why? Because our peers have a terrible habit of making us feel bad about liking what we love. For a lot of people, The Harry Potter or Twilight books were responsible for creating life-long readers and it begs the question does it matter what you read? Well NO! Of course not, reading is reading,

Well NO! Of course not, reading is reading, whether you’re reading Goosebumps, Tracey Beaker, Harry Potter, Twilight, Chick lit (I hate this term but  I feel that is a whole other post, Historical Fiction, only Young Adult or books like Fifty Shades! Who cares you’re a reader, and one book leads to another and another and another. Stick to your favourite genre or don’t explore the classics, or don’t (Pride and Prejudice is a great first classic if you’re looking  for recs) but

Stick to your favourite genre or don’t, explore the classics, or don’t (Pride and Prejudice is a great first classic if you’re looking  for recs) but whatever you do whatever you read, who cares what other people say right?

50 shades.jpg

I remember to trying to explain The Mortal Instruments:City of Bones book to my friends back when it wasn’t a thing and most of my close friends are not fantasy lovers, so it was like banging my head up against a brick wall. In fact I seem to have a lot of people in my life who like reading non-fiction, not fiction which is cool because it works for them.

city of bones

But Fantasy from Epic or High, or Paranormal whatever is just as valid is any other genre, all books have been crafted and loved and come from an author’s desire to write and a readers desire to read them.

I guess what I am trying to say is no book is bad and neither are readers, we are all different and should never be made to feel bad for reading what we love – Whatever that maybe.

I hope you enjoyed my Let’s talk about… see you next time and happy reading!

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare- Review

Stop. If you have not read all the books in The Mortal Instruments Series and The Infernal Devices then this review will spoil things for you- step away now!

This month has been the month of The Mortal Instruments for me (and Shadowhunter Academy and Lady Midnight) This book was such a great round up to a series that I started reading three years ago with City of Bones. I went on a bit of a Shadowhunters hiatus when I finished City of Glass because (and I know some of you will agree) it does feel like a finale. When I started watching the Shadowhunters t.v show on Netflix it all came back to me, this world, this wonderful, wonderful world and what I was missing but not finishing the rest of the series.

cohf

City of Heavenly Fire is so clever the way it interweaves new characters Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn right at the start. We get to know Emma, Julian  and the rest of the Blackthorn children from the beginning of book all ready paving the way for them to take over as the new protagonists in the Dark Artifices.

When we meet Emma and Julian and the rest of the Blackthorns the terrible Sebastian is turning Shadowhunters into his very own Endarkened army getting them to drink from his own sick, Sebastian version of The Mortal Cup. Just replace Angel blood with Demon blood and Sebastian has his very own recipe for zombie, Shadowhunters with kickass fighting skills, all willing to follow him to the end of the world (Evil villain plus evil army sounds like disaster waiting to happen.)

sebastian

Now it has taken five and a bit books for Clary and Jace to get their acts together first there was Simon, there was the whole brother and sister thing, then Jace was being all Herondale-y about EVERYTHING. Finally, Clace are in a good(ish) place I mean it is the end of the world after all and Jace is always going to be Jace (aka such a drama queen) but it’s in the blood *coughs Will*.

clary jace

My favourite ship was not doing as well, in City of Lost Souls held some dramatic moments for me- the Malec breakup. City of Heavenly Fire continues on in this vein, I cannot tell you how many times I said out loud “Magnus just tell Alec who Will is!” So frustrating, but in the best possible way and when Magnus is taken with Raphael, Josealenne and Luke and our A team (Clary, Jace, Alec Izzy and Simon) go to rescue them I loved the moment Alec broke down to Jace was like how would you feel if Clary had been taken? Poor Alec going out his mind and his Parabatai didn’t notice how afraid he was feeling (Jace why are you always so self-involved?).

the smile

The witty dialogue and character development is something I LOVE about Cassandra Clare’s writing you never feel like you are on the outside looking in on the story but really in the book living it with the characters.

Simon is really the hero of this story for me and City of Heavenly Fire just finishes off the journey he has been through in the novels so perfectly – Mundane, Vampire – Clary, Izzy. He saves Magnus, he might have lost his memories but he saved Magnus  and in my book that makes him a true hero.

sizzy

I just want to take a moment to talk about Brother Zachariah after reading Clockwork Princess I knew, I flipping knew he was going to make an appearance now I’m bias Jem’s my favourite character in all of Cassandra Clare’s books (Magnus is chomping at his heels mind you!) Seeing him ‘back’, talk about Tessa about Will *sheds tear* I’m really looking forward to seeing him and Tessa make future appearances in Lady Midnight and Beyond.

Overall this was an epic last instalment, Shadowhunters books are fun, funny and with ships to go down with!

5/5 Paint and Butterflies Stars!

Happy Reading Everyone!

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare- Review

I’m on such a Shadowhunters kick recently in real time I’m reading Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy right now but this isn’t real time this is review time and this is my review of City of Lost Souls!

shadowhunters.jpg 3

Getting back into this world has been so much fun I had quite a substantial break between reading City of Glass and my reading of City of Fallen Angels which was spurred on when I started watching the show on Netflix. It was brought back to me how much I enjoyed being in this world so the minute season 1 ended I picked up City of Fallen Angels and picked up where I had left off. City of Fallen Angels Review

city of lost souls

By the time I had finished City of Fallen Angels I was totally immersed back in this world and it reminded me of the love and laughs that as a reader you can really have with these characters.

Mild Spoilers for City of Lost Souls Ahead

City of Lost Souls book 5 in The Mortal Instruments Series picks up where City of Fallen Angels left off with Jace missing, abducted by the merciless Sebastian. When Clary finally catches up with him he is not the Jace she had left behind. Jace is now bound magically to her evil, demonic brother Sebastian. Whatever Sebastian wills and wishes are Jace’s are as well when Clary is finally forced to join them in a mysterious demonic apartment that moves so fast to is impossible for the other Shadowhunters to track Clary wonders if she will ever get her Jace back and if that is even possible.

This book also upped the anti when is came to Malec ❤ Magnus is my all time favourite character in any of Cassandra Clares books and I felt that we really got a healthy dose of Magnus moments and his story arc with Alec has really grown and developed into something that is just a joy to read about.

malec 3

I felt that City of Lost Souls was an amazing set up for City of Heavenly fire (which I have just finished *squeals* ) I  have the biggest book hangover right now but not to worry Lady Midnight is in the post!

Paint and Butterflies Rating 4/5 Stars!

Happy Reading Everyone!

Let’s talk about Shadowhunters!

shadowhunters

Disclaimer these are just my opinions and are not meant to offend anyone!

I think  I should say before I begin that I am a big fan of The Mortal Instruments/ Infernal Devices (I am yet to read Lady Midnight) and ever since the terrible but I think we can all  say well-meaning film adaptation I have gone into this series with trepidation and LOW expectations. I think it’s fair to say that the casting is just better than the film but my only real issue is Magnus but I’ll get there- one thing at a time.

jace clary

I did want to wait until I watched the whole series and do a series review but… I thought it was okay to have a chat about Shadowhunters before season 1 wraps. I was watching Youtube today and I heard PolandBanana Books say something which made sense to me, (I am power phrasing here) but basically she said when it comes to fantasy there are rules and you have to stick to those or no one knows what’s going on. I think she makes a really good point, the great thing about Cassandra Clare’s books is that she has created the Shadow World weather reading about Shadow Hunters in Victorian London or Modern day New York us as readers know the rules. We know how a Stele works, what Runes do what a Parabati is (lets all pause for a Will and Jem moment) but the show has blundered in and broken a lot of these fundamental rules which for me when watching the show play out is problematic. The biggest ‘rule break’ for me in the show so far is Alec and Jace and their Parabati bond.

jem and will

Spoilers from here on guys!

When I think of Parabati I think of Will and Jem the ultimate Parabati they were in love with the same woman from crying out load and they still loved each other just as much, their bond was that unbreakable the only thing that can break a Parabati bond is death, death! It is not so easily broken by one Parabati ‘searching for the other’ or being angry at the other.

alec

Parabati can angry, furious at the other but are still prepared to die for the other and that’s what separates the books from the show they are failing to show the love that should exist between Alec and Jace all because of that bond.
Following along the lines of rules or rule breaking we all know Shadowhunters heal, get their power from Runes so can someone please tell me why Jace was having a blood transfusion in the last episode? What? I mean huh? Seriously?

What

I feel like it is necessary to mention the whole Micheal Wayland Valentine Glamour thing- (pulls exasperated face) the thing is it is these such plot holes/ unnecessary plot devices that give book adaptations a bad name. Is it necessary to once again dumb down material which has been so successful? But I should say that I am enjoying the show and I do want it to be successful but I think at the moment it’s a bit of a ruff and ready adaptation.

valentine

I just want to briefly mention Magnus, Harry Shum Jr is a great casting choice but what is with all Magnus’ dialogue? It is all so beggy in regards to Alec, book Magnus is my favourite character and has so much wit and so much sass he is missing his Magnus charm and I hope we get to see more of the Magnus we know and love soon!

magnus

Finally, I want to mention Jace and Simon (Jace) and the Jace Simon relationship is the biggest let down for me- book Jace has funny line after funny line, his sniping with Simon made me laugh out loud while reading I hope we get to see more of this hilarious relationship.

jace

But having said all that I am really enjoying this show so far and looking forward to seeing the rest of the season and super excited for season 2!

Hope everyone is enjoying Shadowhunters!

Happy Reading Everyone!

Shadowhunters (The Mortal Instruments) TV Show vs Movie

I am a huge Cassandra Clare fan and love The Mortal Instruments books so way back when (2013) The City of Bones movie burst onto our screens I was filled with hope, excitement, joy but as we all know (or you do if you’re a fan) it didn’t work out so well.

the mortal instruments the mortal instruments.jpg 2

My big problem with any book to movie adaptation is when they don’t follow they book – it doesn’t have to be to the letter, I know something’s don’t translate from page to screen BUT with something as complicated as The Shadow Hunter Chronicles and having to keep in mind a prequel series like The Infernal Devices keeping the original text in mind, and sticking to it as much as possible is a good idea (it is popular for a reason).

the mortal instruments.jpg 13 the mortal instruments.jpg 14

Lily Collins and Katherine McNamara as Clary

I do really like Lily Collins as Clary and I know this is controversial but I do like Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace so I wanted to briefly have a look at the new cast and chat about the teasers that have been released so far and THAT pilot  preview that’s been released online.

the mortal instruments.jpg 6 the mortal instruments.jpg 15

Jamie Cambell Bower and Dominic Sherwood as Jace

I saw a preview of the up and coming Shadowhunters which is going to be broadcast on ABC family soon to be rebranded as Freedform. Which is interesting in it’s self- hopefully the channel will be less ‘family’ and will have the freedom to make its shows appeal to all audiences not just the family audience. I hope so, mainly because I think some of the later content of the Shadowhunters books requires some leniency when it comes to what is considered ‘mature content.’

the mortal instruments.jpg 7 the mortal instruments.jpg 8

Robert Sheehan and Alberto Rosende as Simon

I think the casting choices are interesting, most people are going to be happy with Jace and Clary visually they look closer to how they did in the books which is a positive step forward. For me personally though Lily Collins is a talented actress and although the film wasn’t great she really did pull off a great Clary. When it comes to Jace, the most important thing for me is that his attitude is displayed correctly, he has such great one liners in the books and his back and forth with Simon is brilliant if they get that right that’s a real positive step forward to success.

the mortal instruments.jpg 9 the mortal instruments.jpg 10

Matthew Daddario and Kevin Zeggers as Alec

The pilot snippet and two teasers have been released so far if you haven’t seen them they are all available on Youtube, I don’t want to make judgements because as a fan I would love Shadowhunters to be a long running success but from what I have seen it looks a bit Vampire Academy to me which makes me think they might be going for the funny, cringe, slap stick angle rather than dark with underlying humour. Just going to have to wait and see!

the mortal instruments.jpg 11 the mortal instruments.jpg 12

Godfrey Gao and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus

So to round up casting, so far looks good, I have only mentioned and pictured my favourite characters in this post but may go on to do a full casting post. Harry Shum Jr. is my favourite casting so far I think he is going to make a brilliant Magnus and can’t wait to see him bring the wonderful Warlock to life! Basically I can’t wait and I’m going to have to re-read City of Bones before January 2016 to get Shadowhunters ready. What to you think of the Shadowhunters casting, love the movie? Hate the movie? Do you think a successful adaptation can be done? Fangirl in the comments!
