The Host by Stephenie Meyer- Review

the host

Overview

The Host is the story of Wanderer (or Wanda as she is later known) she is an Alien, a species known as Souls that have invaded and conquered earth. To survive Souls ‘bind’ with another species essentially taking over their mind and body, but when the Souls come to earth they get more than they bargin for when they encounter Human Beings. Human Beings  are more emotionally developed than some of the other bodies Souls have inhabited and less willing to let go of life and fade away, making the habitation of a human body an emotional and almost traumatising experience for an unsuspecting Soul.

Wanda inhabits the body of Melenie Stryder a young woman who was on the run with her younger brother Jamie and boyfriend Jared when her body was discovered by the ‘Seekers’ a group of Souls tasked with hunting down the last of humanity. When Wanda inhabits Melanie’s body she realises that she is not alone and Melanie is still with her and is not going to make it easy for Wanda to take over.

When Wanda’s seeker comes to her and asks her to access Melanie’s memories Wanda finds that she is resistant, she is sympathetic to Melanie and starts to form attachments to Jamie and Jared. While Wanda is a sweet, shy and quiet Soul Melanie is full of fire and will do anything to protect the ones she loves. When Wanda’s Seeker starts to suspect she inhabits a resistant Host she decides to inhabit Melanie herself. Melanie, frightened that Jamie and Jared’s location will be discovered convinces Wanda to run from the Seeker and her fellow Souls and help her find her family.

What did I think?

I really loved The Host it is slightly slow to start but once Wanda and Melanie join the other humans the story really blossoms. Watching the humans deal with having a Soul in their camp, the very thing that is ending their species is really interesting, also Melanie’s Uncle Jeb is such a cute character sometimes I think he is so lovely and then I realise in everything he does there is an agenda. Essentially though the Host is a love story between four people and only three bodies, the back and forth between Melanie, Jared, Wanda and Ian is really funny, heart breaking and beautiful.

I wish that Stephanie Meyer would write the long awaited sequel but sadly I don’t think that is going to happen.

Books that I come back to again and again…

I have been hearing a lot recently about books that have made a big impact on us, books that means somethings too us and books we come back to again and again and one name I keep hearing again and again is Harry Potter. Now, I have seen the films and I guess when I was growing up I somehow missed the Harry Potter boat but after hearing what I was missing out on I decided to read the books which before you start guys yes I loved. But this isn’t about what everyone else loves I wanted write about the books that have stayed with me throughout my life and the ones I want to go back to again.

Goosebumps by R.L Stine

H253_SCH_GB7_Dummy_0.tif

I remember being a child and loving the Goosebumps books scaring my self silly and thumbing the pages again and again. If for some Harry Potter ignited there love of reading the Goosebumps series definitely helped my fire grow into a roaring blaze.

P.S I Love You by Cecila Ahern

p.s I love you

I love, love, love this novel which I later found out was Ceceila Ahern’s debut written at the age of twenty-one. It is the story of Holly and Gerry two people who were just meant for each other that is until Gerry dies of cancer (not a spoiler), and the series of love letters he leaves behind.  This book is the first book I ever read where I both laughed and cried and I mean real sobbing; it’s beautiful and is still (it has been some years since I first read it) the first book I recommend to people who are after a romance. When the movie came out (sigh) and I know it happens to all of us when our favourite books are adapted into movies but Hilary Swank was just not how I picture Holly and to top it off my favourite, belly laugh moment and tear jerker moment had both been cut from the movie. All I’m saying guys is that the film does not do the book justice read it trust me it will stay with you forever.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

pride and

My favourite of all Austen’s novel but for me it was the character of Elizabeth Bennett who stayed with me- a strong, independent and free willed woman she is one of my favourite fictional women of all time. I couldn’t mention Pride and prejudice with out at least mentioning Mr Darcy (sigh) I love a good Austen adaptation as much as the next gal but Mathew McFadden will always be Darcy too me. (Sorry Colin)

You Had Me At Hello

15733851

This book is a classic case of the blurb does not do it justice and I fear I won’t be able to either but the feels guys oh the feels… You Had Me at Hello is about two best friends who meet at university (boy/girl situation you know the deal) anyway in their last days of university there is some mis-communication leading them to lead very separate lives. Ten years later they are reunited… The story is told in both the past and the present leading up to what separates them and the now. I have read this book so many times, every time my heart is broken and every time I come back for me. It’s probably my favourite contemporary romance novel of all time.

Summer in February by Jonathan Smith

345309

One of things I love about Summer in February is that it is a true story adapted by Jonathan Smith from the diaries of the main character Captain Gilbert Evans. The book follows a famous colony of artists which included A.J Munnings and Laura and Harold Night. This tragic tale follows the love triangle between A.J Munnings, Captain Evans and A.J’s wife Florence. The books is full of love and art and tragedy and whats more it all true. It been adapted to film starring Dan Stevens and Emily Browning.

Me Before You by JoJo Moyes

me before you 1

I have only just read and reviews this book so I don’t want to go on about it too much. The reason Me Before You makes it onto this list is that it has stayed with me every where I go Me Before You is in the back of my mind and every time I try to start something new I put it down again because nothing compares to the world I have left behind. Me Before You = Book Hang over.

These are all books that either mean something to me or have stayed with me over time I would love to hear about yours. x

Station Eleven- Review (& Bout of Books Rap up)

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel is in it’s most very basic form a group of Shakespeare actors who are performing King Lear and then… The End of The World happens! Truly though while the Shakespearean actors are one set of characters in this novel the book is about a group of characters including the actors -all linked by a character who dies in the beginning of the novel (don’t freak guys this is sooo not a spoiler).

StationelevenUKHC

No doubt this is a great book BUT I personally have my issues with it. It’s brilliant and original no question but the narrative structure is such that it is really hard to fall in love with, root for, or hate/dislike a particular character. This being so I did sort of lose interest about 3/4 of the way though, but this is just my personal preference – I enjoy having a character to root for.

I would still recommend this book to a friend but the right friend. From afar I could appreciate this book for what it was (a superb piece of writing), up close I was just looking forward to my next read.

Over all I gave it a Goodreads rating of 3/5 stars.

While reading Station Eleven I was participating in bout of books 13.0 I think my reading list was a bit ambitious as I have had a busy week but I managed to get though Station Eleven and Saga Volume one which was brilliant! It was my first ever graphic novel and I was, before reading a bit unsure about the whole medium but I was so wrong. The art was fantastic, the story was so great, I was torn between flipping through the pages as fast as I could to find out what happened next and gazing at the amazing art work for as long as possible.                                                                                                                      515jeiadAzL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

I gave it a Goodreads rating of 5/5 stars! (Would definitely recommend to graphic novel newbies! But be aware of adult content.)

Overall I didn’t get though as much as I wanted too in bout of books 13.0 but there’s always the next read-a-thon 🙂

Angelfall by Susan Ee Review

Some spoilers ahead

Angelfall is Susan Ee’s hugely successful self published young adult novel this book started off small but my god had it grown some wings and taken on a life of its own. This is what authors dream of, this is a real self publishing success now with print editions, a sequel and third book on the way AngelFall (Penryn and the end of days) really has made its mark.

ang

So Angelfall does exactly what it says on the tin, Angels have fallen and they are reeking havoc on earth – this is a real dystopian drama and at its heart is Penryn a teenage girl who is just trying to survive with her mum and younger sister, that is until she meets the angel Raffe.

So I loved this book, it was such a nice surprise to open a  young adult novel and not have to endure a predictable romance page after page, while reading Angelfall I was waiting for some kind of predictable Twilight esk romance to begin and it never  came which left me wanting which is the best feeling when at the start of a trilogy.  Penryn is an excellent leading lady, she is a kick ass, take no prisoners kind of chick and I like that, and I like that she can hold on to that part of herself when the world is literally falling around her ears. Not to mention that she has one mental mother to contain with, from the word go Penryn’s mum makes for some awkward reading but by the end of the book she is my favourite character and has a great story arch of her own.

I have read a few angel books recently most recently the Halo/Hades/Heaven series all which I have reviewed on my blog and all I can say is that this just smashes Halo right out of the park. I think Angelfall has allowed real scope for the series to develop and in in my opinion there is a love story there but building slowly like a beautiful Raffe shaped flame and although I am eager for more Raffe and Penryn Angelfall isn’t all about the love story which is really refreshing.

fhdf

The second book in the Angelfall series called World After and it’s out now and I will be picking it up ASAP I just need to know what happens next! I would defiantly recommend Angelfall to other readers it’s something different and a refreshing change in the young adult genre this book is a real page turner and I was well and truly blown away.

Maxie Shannon and Savannah Trimmel are more than best friends. They’re sisters, bound by a tragic past and an unbreakable bond. When Isaac, Savannah’s boyfriend, falls victim to an act of violence that leaves him with no recollection of the prior eighteen months, both women tend to his recovery. For Savannah, it’s simply an attempt to care for the man she loves.

For Maxie, it’s a chance at redemption.

She tells Isaac nothing of the passionate secrets they’d been keeping from Savannah, nor of the unyielding feelings that nearly consumed them both.
